It's been a tough week. And it feels silly to post

It's been a tough week. And it feels silly to post about processing tomatoes. And yet... we don't stop working. We don't stop finding ways to put healthy food on the table, support our local food systems, nurture resilient communities, take care of each other.

Save this one for next year or send it to a friend whose tomato harvest got away from them this year. It will save you time, tastes delicious, and doesn't take up much freezer space.

And you can use that time and energy saved to keep fighting for equal rights, environmental protections, and the belief that love wins over hate.

My kids have helped me forage chanterelles since they were born. I remember years when I would stop to nurse a baby while foraging. And years when the ferns were taller than their little bodies.

Now my kids can spot chanterelles as well as I can. They can get into all the tight spots. Two of my three kids now use small knives, like me, to cut the base of the mushrooms from the ground. It makes cleaning them easier.

We picked about 10 pounds this wknd. Plenty for soup, veggie + egg scrambles, pasta, and the freezer. I'll share with neighbors + keep the lifetime of memories.

Making compost 👩🏻‍🌾 Pulled my summer ga

Making compost 👩🏻‍🌾 Pulled my summer garden + layered in used chicken bedding to make a new compost pile. I sprinkled in some finished compost halfway thru to inoculate the new pile with micro organisms, giving it a jumpstart.

I love the 3-bin composting method! One bin always has finished compost. The 2nd is usually in process. And the 3rd is my fresh pile. By the time that 3rd pile is full, it's usually time to use the 1st pile in the garden. Then you're back to an empty bin ready to start again.

The wood slats on the front of each bin are removable when I need to get in there + mix the pile. That sends in a rush of oxygen to energize the micro organisms. It also ensures even decomposition.

Each bin also has a hard cover, so it doesn't get oversaturated. Some water is good, but you don't want it sopping wet.

Grateful to @northwest_native_landscapes for getting every detail just right on constructing these. Working our compost pile is one of my favorite cool season jobs + a great workout. This is the perfect time to build a 3-bin system, when the garden gets quiet ⚒️

Everyone's favorite 🐔 This is Glory, our Golden Laced Wyandotte. She was raised by my daughter Juniper 3 yrs ago. She's well-loved, friendly, regularly lays peach-colored eggs, and has the prettiest feather colors in the flock 😍

Processing apples 🍏🍎 The kids all pitched in. I made a mini apple tasting for folks while I worked at the cutting station. It was a gorgeous celebration of autumn, community, + local food.

Everyone went home with fresh-pressed cider + enough apples for pies, crisps, jams, all the things 🥧 Grateful for the invitation to be part of it 🙏🏼
