I should begin by admitting I can be sometimes obsessive and neurotic. That in mind, we managed to buy a house last summer and it has become my new obsession. First it was tango. Then it was ceramics. Now it’s my house. Our house.
Our poor little house was passed through a family that somehow produced four selfish and irresponsible crabby kids. The kids turned into adults. The adult who owned the house rented it out to a series of unsavory characters. We bought the house and have been making it ours. We painted all the rooms, took down wood paneling (shudder) and gave her some love.
My husband gave me a book at Christmas that changed things for me. It is called Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, by Toby Hemenway. A few weeks later I vowed to build a food forest and have spent every waking moment digging up our backyard. Jay doesn’t think I’m too nuts, and that basically enables me to throw ourselves as deep into this practice as I can dig.
Between other random rants, part of the goal for this blog is to write about my trials and failures in the world of urban homesteading, using permaculture as my guide.
